Personal blogs, on the whole, are not a good way to make money online.
No one cares if you spilt soda on the rug, your cat chewed up your monitor’s power cord or you broke your Xbox controller by hurling at the TV after your 5th “Game Over” on Saints Row 2.
But don’t give up – a personal blog can be successful if you understand what appeals to the every day reader.
If you got drunk last night, don’t simply write “I got so drunk, man!” – draw the reader in; describe tripping over the coffee table and the mysterious bruise on your back today.
If you got fed up playing Saints Row 2 put your own spin on it – describe it like a real life event right up until the last paragraph where it becomes clear you are simply discussing your in-game escapades.
People also love suspense – end some of your posts with big possibilities; for example if you cater to an adult audience, “I’m going out tonight in the hopes of getting laid – I’ll update you all in the AM
”
Or if you are aiming more at school aged teenagers talk about how you’re going to try to pull a prank on one of your friends, (I once convinced one of mine he was color blind for two whole days,) or how you are going to take notes on everything your teacher says that sounds dirty, ie, “During P.E. Mr Smith kept screaming ‘hard and fast’ at us, while the English teacher Miss Hall, when asked what to do with the pen I had borrowed advised me to ‘just stick it in there’ (pointing to the jar on the desk.)”
Humour, suspense and the idea that you don’t fit in with the rest of society will help you gain a solid following; Why? Because most people feel like they don’t fit in either.
